What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found in the surface of the earth. There were many materials used in the construction industry that contained asbestos. The most common form of asbestos found in domestic houses is bonded asbestos materials.

Bonded materials are mainly made up of a bonding compound such as cement with up to 15% asbestos added. Bonded materials that contain asbestos are solid, quite rigid and the dangerous asbestos fibres are tightly bound in the material. They are commonly called;

Do I have materials containing Asbestos in my house?

Asbestos was mined in Australia and due to its durability, fire resistance and insulating properties it was a material of choice in the building industry between the 1940's and late 1980's before the production of asbestos stopped. The use of all forms of asbestos has been banned nationwide since 31 December 2003. However this ban does not apply to asbestos materials installed prior to this date.

Generally, if your house was built;

Before mid 1980's – highly likely it would have materials containing asbestos
Between mid 1980's and 1990 – likely it would have materials containing asbestos
After 1990 – highly unlikely it would have materials containing asbestos
